A Closer Look at How InsideOUT Writers Impacts Incarcerated Youth

What's your story banner

Inside Out Writers (IOW) is a non-profit that aims to empower incarcerated youth through writing. They believe the power of writing can reduce juvenile recidivism by helping to develop critical thinking skills and build self-esteem.

The organization was founded in 1996 by Sister Janet Harris, a nun who worked with youth in the juvenile justice system. Since then, Inside Out Writers has expanded to serve over 1,500 students annually in various juvenile detention centers and probation camps throughout California.

They provide a safe and supportive environment for incarcerated youth to express themselves through creative writing, where experienced writers and educators teach the classes.

Their curriculum includes various writing styles, such as poetry, fiction, and personal narratives, and covers topics like identity, trauma, and social justice.

Goals and Objectives

IOW wants to help incarcerated youth develop their skills and confidence to succeed. The organization’s objectives include:

  • Providing writing workshops and mentoring programs to incarcerated youth
  • Encouraging young people to explore their creativity and to express themselves
  • Building a community of writers who support one another
  • Fostering critical thinking and communication skills

They believe writing can be a powerful tool for personal growth and are committed to helping youth in the juvenile justice system become agents of change.

Programs and Impact

Writing Workshops

The workshops aim to help incarcerated youth express themselves creatively. They are facilitated by experienced writers and educators who guide and support them.

Through these workshops, they can explore their thoughts and feelings and better understand their experiences.

Writing and sharing helps build a sense of community and connection. It allows them to see they’re not alone in their struggles.

IOW has significantly impacted the lives of many incarcerated youth in their programs.

Those who participated while incarcerated earned degrees and became successful writers and educators.

Others became published authors or pursued careers in education and social justice.

Community Outreach

IOW’s community outreach programs work with schools, community organizations, and government agencies to raise awareness about the issues facing incarcerated youth.

Their efforts have gained public awareness for reform in the criminal justice system.
