5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Changing Careers

There comes a time in everyone’s life when they question their career choices and wonder if they’re on the right path. Whether you’re fresh out of college or have been in the workforce for years, it’s never too late to explore new possibilities.

A career is a large part of your identity, so it’s not something you want to neglect. Usually, you have more than one, except of all your identities it’s the one you spend the most time being.

In this post, I’ll explore some questions you should ask yourself before embarking on a new journey.

1. What Do I Enjoy Doing?

The first question you should ask yourself when considering a new career is what are you good at and what do you enjoy doing? Sometimes, our passion and skills don’t align with what we do for a living.

That’s why it’s crucial to take some time to think about what tasks and activities you can do successfully that you don’t hate. It’ll provide a good starting point for researching new jobs or industries.

2. What are My Career Goals?

Another question to consider is your goals and how a new career path will fit into those goals. Ask yourself if switching careers will bring you closer to achieving your long-term plans. Other aspects like compensation, work-life balance, and opportunities for advancement are also important.

3. What Training or Education is Needed?

Sometimes, you need additional training or education to change careers. That’s why doing your research on what certificates, degrees, or courses are required.

Only you can decide if you’re willing to invest the time and resources into learning new skills for your chosen field.

4. Do I Have a Strong Support System?

Changing courses takes time, energy, and some financial planning. And everyone needs a solid support system when making a life change. Talking to people you trust can give you valuable insight. Ask for feedback from your mentor, family, friends, or previous colleagues.

Here’s the caveat. Not everyone likes change. Just know there’s a difference between being practical and someone projecting insecurities onto you. Feedback can be helpful, but ultimately, it’s up to you to decide what you want for your life.

5. Am I Willing to Do the Work?

Know your risk tolerance and how much work you want to invest to make it happen. Changing careers involves significant effort and can be scary at times, but if it’s the right decision for you, then doing the work and making sacrifices to achieve your goals will be worth it.
