7 Types of Face Masks Compared

Find the Best Face Mask for Your Skin

Want to add face masks to your routine but don’t know which one to buy? Keep reading to find out what face mask is best for your skin type!

Your skin is the largest organ of your body. Whether you’re struggling with a skin issue or want to pamper yourself, adding a face mask to your routine once or twice a week can transform your skin forever. A good routine can also save you tons of money in the future.

Taking care of your skin can help you avoid issues down the road that can be costly. Procedures for discoloration, acne scars, and other skin problems that require a visit to the dermatologist may be prevented.

Facials are essential treatments at the spa for a reason. But the same complexion-boosting effects can be done at home. Masks deliver high concentrations of active ingredients to your skin. It targets specific skin problems to improve its appearance and health to give it a dewy, radiant glow.

However, the variety of face masks out there makes it confusing for people to know which one is right for them. Not to worry, that’s why I’m here, to give you the skinny on the most popular masks and their key benefits!

How to Find the Best Face Mask for Your Skin Type:

  • Oily Skin: Look for masks that contain ingredients such as clay or charcoal as they work by absorbing the oil from the pores. Product packaging will likely use terms like purifying, clarifying, or detoxifying.
  • Dry Skin: Products will be labeled hydrating, moisturizing, or nourishing and contain softening ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and plant oils and butters.
  • Sensitive Skin: Key terms to look for are soothing and calming with anti-inflammatory ingredients that include aloe and oat.
  • Combination or Normal Skin: Look for masks that target your current skin needs or goals such as, brightening, pore-minimizing, or acne breakouts. You could also try “multi-masking” and spot treat certain areas with specific masks, like a purifying formula for an oilier T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) and a hydrating formula for the rest of the face.

7 Types of Face Masks Compared

1.  Clay Masks

Clay masks remove toxins from the skin by replenishing clogged pores, making them great for acne-prone skin. However, they can be a bit drying and may need to be followed with a moisturizer.

One that has gained cult-fave status is Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay. People have used it in beauty rituals for years, even dating back to 4,000 years ago. What makes it effective is that the negative charge from the clay draws out the positive charge from the skin to remove impurities.

Dermatologists recommend using this mask once a month at most. They highly advise against using it during the winter months as it can be too intense. Even the most oily-complected individuals should use it sparingly.*

2.  Charcoal Masks

Charcoal masks are the most diverse type of face mask as they are available in different varieties: charcoal mud mask, cream mask, sheet mask, and peel-off mask. However, they all contain the same core ingredient: activated charcoal.

Activated charcoal has created a buzz in the skincare industry because of its skin detoxifying properties. Its gentle drawing action removes dust and debris from clogged pores, which leaves your skin feeling clean and refreshed.

3.  Honey Masks

If there’s one natural ingredient that can be vouched for its skin benefits, it is honey. It’s the best ingredient for a natural at-home mask. Honey face masks are great for acne and pimples, clogged pores, signs of aging, sunburn, and lightning scars. They are also great for skin hydration and give you a natural glow.

There are many reasons people use homemade beauty products and prefer them over commercial ones. Homemade products are budget-friendly, custom-made, and free of preservatives and chemicals.

4.  Cream Masks

Cream masks are ideal for people with dry skin who need a hydration boost. They typically contain oil-based moisturizers that penetrate deep within the skin to restore lost moisture.

Certain cream masks also help attract and bind moisture into the skin cells, leaving the skin visibly plumper and vivacious.

5.  Gel Masks

Gel face masks tend to be water-based and have a cooling, soothing effect on the skin. They are considered the best face mask for dehydrated, sensitive skin.

They are ideal for any skin type, but especially for those with dry or sensitive skin. The purpose of this mask is to provide extra hydration and nourishment to dehydrated, dull, tired skin.

It can be used up to three times a week.

6.  Dead Sea Mud Mask

Face masks made with actual Dead Sea Mud can be the solution to all your skincare woes. The black clay found at the bottom of the Dead Sea is rich in antioxidants and minerals, making it a highly sought-after commodity in the skincare industry.

It works for clogged pores to acne, uneven skin tone, and dry spots. Everything. I’m a HUGE fan of Dead Sea Mud and have been using AHAVA products for over 20 years. No other mask has ever left my skin feeling as silky (I’m not a brand ambassador, just a loyal consumer!).

7.  Seaweed Face Masks

Packed with plenty of useful vitamins and minerals, seaweed is a versatile ingredient that works for all skin types. A seaweed face mask can easily fit into everyone’s skincare regimen.

Seaweed masks detoxify the skin and help to regulate oil balance. It nourishes the skin from the inside out. They are also great for reducing the appearance of aging.

So there you have it, the seven most popular face masks and their key benefits.

But no matter what mask you use, make sure to cleanse your face with lukewarm water first. It allows your pores to open up, which gives you optimal benefits from any facial. Apply your mask; when you’re ready to remove it, wash it off with lukewarm water again. Then splash your face with cold water to close the pores.

Great skin isn’t just a matter of DNA — it’s all about your daily habits.

Beauty is Skin Deep

Taking care of your skin is important. When you look good, you feel good. Since your face is the first thing others see when they meet you, why not put your best face forward? There’s no better time than now to develop a skincare routine that works for you.

A good skincare regimen can also help establish other healthy habits like fitness, clean eating, oral care, and hair and scalp routines.0

Like fitness, having great skin can be achieved. But it needs to be attended to regularly, and it takes more than one treatment to see results. Make it part of your daily lifestyle.

Even just 15-20-30 minutes a week (read instructions for your product application) can help the largest organ of your body do its job better — giving you beautiful results for years to come.
